This is truly a must for any fan of the genre. Plain and simple. This book is set up like a journal that an unknown soldier is keeping from just before the zombie outbreak, all the way through to a critical stopping point that leaves you hanging and wanting more. Things start off slowly, like reading someone's real journal, but then there's writings of things seeming off, and news broadcasts from other parts of the world and internet sites with strange phenomenon occuring. Then he writes of his briefings as things start to get crazy, then, just that quick, all hell breaks loose. You get a sense of how lonely the character feels at times, wishing for come companionship in his isolated, but well protected home. Of course, no home could be ready for a zombie apocalypse, so he can't stay there forever... As the book goes on, and he finally does meet people, you can tell that the character gets close to these people, and genuinely cares what happens to them, all the while having a strange feeling of guilt for killing the "people" that are now Undead. It's really pretty gripping, and you find yourself tensing up at times reading the action sequences, as even though it's written as a journal entry, and you know the main character is going to be "ok" as long as there are pages left, you never know for sure about the people he's surrounded by, and it leaves you hoping for everyone to make it out. As I stated before, it's certainly good for fans of the genre, but it's also great for anyone that likes a suspense story.
